“Perro de Presa Canario”, “Canary Mastiff”, or “Presa Canario”

The name of the breed in Spanish means “Canarian catch dog.” Originating from the Canary Islands, the Presa Canario is an exotic breed. The breed is a working dog with a balanced temperament, self confidence and physical strength. With these combined traits, the Presa was used in War to take out the front line of the enemy. Today they are used for many different purposes, raging from pets to working on farms managing livestock. They are a large breed. Females average 90-120 LBS and males 110-150 LBS. Their most common colors are fawn, brindle, and black. They have short hair, thick muscular frames, large chests, massive heads, and a unique black mask. The Presa Canario is an alert, smart, and territorial dog, who is very protective of its own. The life expectancy is 8-12 years.

Owning Presa Canario is not recommended for first time dog owners. It is important that you train your Presa Canario, as they are a very stubborn breed. Presa’s are obedient to it’s owner and family members, but are very suspicious of strangers. With proper training and socialization, Presa’s can be trusted around people and other animals. Presa’s love to work, whether it’s guarding, protecting or just being a companion.
